“With this generous donation the Cancer Fund has purchased a large amount of origami paper and booklets which lets me give plenty to patients and staff in support of their wellbeing. I offer origami sessions at patients’ bedsides, to bring moments of joy and connection in support of wellbeing. It’s a delight to now offer papers and booklets to patients to bring inspiration and express care. I adapt to patient’s needs, whether they are keen to join, or if too unwell, to choose papers and ideas to then watch folding. Time together brings conversation and a positive focus beyond illness. Sessions are uplifting and pieces are kept by patients as lasting reminders. We are also supporting staff wellbeing with origami sessions in our ward, and bringing origami to our staff rooms with colourful cranes to lift mood in rooms without windows.”
A huge thank you to the husband of one of our patients for a very generous and thoughtful donation made in her memory, supporting origami for patients and staff at UCLH. Lizzie Burns, creative specialist, tells us about the impact of this donation.
Patient feedback has been really positive
“I really enjoyed it – calming and focused, and achievement in a short period of time – I’ve got something to show for the past hour, and that’s not always the case”
“I look forward to coming along and focusing and finding my mind can concentrate – it was just running away, and now it’s calmer.”
