Earlier this year, we purchased virtual reality headsets for the teenage and young adult services team.

Andre, a youth support coordinator, tells us about the impact new headsets have been making for young patients at UCLH, helping them to relax during treatment and procedures.

“I had the pleasure of supporting Sophie, while her PICC line was being removed. Sophie was extremely anxious in the beginning despite Mum and Dad being present. I asked Sophie if she would like to try the VR headset to help calm her emotions. Sophie agreed. I found a helpful mindfulness program for her to watch, and she followed the instructions such as breathing in and out. During the removal, Sophie did not make a sound or move. At the point when she became worried, the PICC had already been removed. She was shocked and relieved it was over. Sophie said the VR headset did its job in distracting her, and she didn’t feel as anxious.”
